Article About Claude Cahun and Marcel Duchamp

1. What is it about the looking glass that imprisons men?

When this question was first posed by Marcel Ducamp / Rrose Selavy, the times were very different and the social constructs have certainly changed. But i feel that in our culture today, style and attitude are certainly factors that go into this, but i don't think that it is the main reason. The idea of Self Image may be another factor now, with facebook and myspace and all of these online social networks, self image is a big issue these days and is making narcissism more apparent than before. The idea of the ego seems to be more prevalent these days as well, so men reflecting on themselves through the looking glass is more acceptable these day. I think that men are more fascinated about their image and identity because it's an ongoing trend as well. The idea of metrosexuality, means that men are becoming less grungy and more acceptable or well dressed. This idea was instilled in us during the early 2000s and has been taking off ever since. So all and all, i don't really know why men are becoming imprisoned by their looking glass, but they are and it seems like it's here to stay.

2. Duchamp made a point on saying that men do not know how to look at themselves and require women to tell them how to look at themelves, is that true?

Ummm, I don't know about this. i know that women can see things in men that men cannot or chose not to see in themselves, but I don't know if all women have this ability. But, in all honesty, I have met some dumb women. Regardless, I feel that this is more true than not. I am not talking about in a fashion sense, but in a way of seeing what's good about a person. Men thnik completely differently then women, so it only makes sense that each of us can see different thing more clearly. I feel that women can see things that are less obvious to a person, they can analyze a personality better, but I feel men can tell who is a more genuine character, if that makes sense. Men can stop, i don't know how to say it, but they can see something different about people, they can get through an outter layer of a person and connect well. But, women just have better intuition. So, I feel that this question didn't really go anywhere, but I dunno, we'll see what happens.
